Graduate Student, Professor Win Judge's Award at Microsoft Competition |
| Two Purdue University industrial designers won a grand prize at an international competition co-sponsored by Microsoft Corp. for a new personal computer design that may change the way people watch movies, listen to music, play games and read magazines.
The concept computer, called Bookshelf, eliminates the most common problems – digital copyrights and inconvenient accessibility – in the multimedia entertainment business today, says graduate student Sungho "Oho" Son.
He teamed with Scott Shim, a professor of visual and performing arts, to design a new personal computer that won the $50,000 Judge's Award at Microsoft's Next Generation Windows PC Design Competition. The competition was sponsored by Microsoft and the Industrial Designers Society of America, and the winners were announced at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 5-8.

Purdue Begins Program to Recuit, Retain Native American Students |
A program in Purdue University's Graduate School will help give Native American students a home away from home while they continue their educations.
Through a cooperative agreement with a mentoring program at Northern Arizona University, the Native American Cohort at Purdue program, nicknamed the Tecumseh Project, will offer support to Native American graduate students in ways that have not been formally available before.
"There are cultural differences that are reflected in body language, mannerisms and eye contact that both the students and faculty need to be aware of for Native American students to transition smoothly to academic life," said Aleeah Livengood of Mulberry, Ind., a Native American who will receive a master's degree in special education next semester. "We have a deep affiliation with community and family that makes it difficult for us to leave them and go to college. Also, because college educations usually require one to leave that environment, it has never been a priority within that community structure. However, the acquisition of an education is the only way that we can improve our lives, the lives of our children and our people."
