Preparing Future Faculty

PFF explores faculty roles and responsibilities as they relate to the missions of an institution of higher education, and the type of institution including community colleges, liberal arts colleges, research universities, and minority-serving institutions.

  • Tuesdays, 1:30 to 3:20 p.m.
  • 2 credit hour course
  • Pass/No Pass grading system.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to do the following after the completion of the course:
  • Explore and reflect on your assumptions about academic roles, positions, practices, missions, and institutions.
  • Construct an institutional profile and relate your career goals and faculty skill sets with institutional missions and departmental goals.
  • Construct a career strategic plan for enhancing and maintaining faculty skill sets and competencies.
  • Critique, interpret, support or debate three "hot topics" identified within class or select three topics not covered in class.

Program Components

A sample syllabus, including speaker list and activities, is available on the Professional Development Community. Three basic elements compose the course:
  • discussion with administrators, faculty members, and colleagues
  • reflection through portfolio construction
  • development and articulation of skills and competencies
    Advanced doctoral students are eligible to register for GRAD 59000 (CRN 37260). Instructor consent is required.

      I cannot say enough good things about this course. I feel so much better prepared to become a faculty member now than I did before taking the course. Each of the speakers had something important to offer to the class that helped advise us in different situations involved in the interview
and hiring process as well as once we were faculty members. I believe that the greatest benefit of this class for me was the exercises in developing our cover letter, CV, research statement, and
teaching philosophy.
