Program Description
The Strategic Initiatives Fellowship program provides an opportunity for graduate students, under the direction of a faculty member, to impact graduate education by addressing a Graduate School strategic initiative. Individual graduate students may submit a proposal for one award related to any of the Graduate School strategic initiatives. Strategic Initiatives Fellowships provide a stipend, Graduate Tuition Scholarships, payment of most fees, a supply and expense fund, and a medical insurance supplement.
The Graduate School strategic initiatives include:
attracting external and internal sources of funding;
enhancing recruitment and retention of graduate students to increase the number, quality, and diversity;
emphasizing mentoring relationships between faculty and students;
fostering interdisciplinary graduate education; or
improving services to enhance the quality of life for graduate students.
Qualifications
Open to all Purdue graduate students who are enrolled in a degree-granting graduate program at Purdue.
Selection
Selection of Bilsland Strategic Initiatives Fellows is conducted by members of the graduate faculty who review and evaluate the proposals based on the following criteria:
contribution to identified initiative;
quality of proposal content;
conceptually strong foundation;
adherence to proposal submission guidelines;
endorsement of faculty member.
Award
The tenure of the Bilsland Strategic Initiatives Fellowship is one year, and the Graduate School provides:
Stipend of $18,000;
Graduate Tuition Scholarships, with payment of most fees;
Medical insurance supplement;
Up to $1500 to conduct project activities.
Award Tenure
Bilsland Strategic Initiatives Fellowships are non-renewable. However, there is no limit on the number of times a graduate student can submit proposals.
Award Terms & Conditions
Bilsland Strategic Initiatives Fellows must:
be enrolled and maintain status as graduate students in a degree-granting graduate program at Purdue;
register for at least nine credits in both the fall and the spring sessions and for at least three credits during the summer session. Fellows who are not registered during the summer session will not receive a stipend in June and July;
maintain satisfactory academic and scholarly performance and progress and satisfactory work performance;
maintain a valid e-mail address with the Fellowship Office;
submit an Academic Progress Report each semester to the Fellowship Office;
agree to provide a summary report of the activities accomplished on the project;
adhere to the Graduate School Fellowship guidelines;
complete all requirements idenified in the proposal.
Application Process
Completed applications must include the following:
1. Strategic Initiatives application form;
2. Proposal, which should be 3-5 pages in length and include:
abstract and project rationale, citing relevant research;
project description, objectives and method evaluation;
itemized budget (limit of $1500). When preparing the budget, student should consult with their departments business office;
3. Curriculum vitae;
4. Statement of endorsement from the major professor or faculty advisor.
Submit completed proposals electronically to fellowships@purdue.edu no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 10, 2006.
