Student Awards


Student Travel Awards

To emphasize the importance of graduate students attending and participating in scientific meetings, the PULSe Program will hold a Travel Award Competition twice per academic year (both fall and spring semesters) for students presenting at professional meetings. The fall semester deadline is October 15 and the spring semester deadline is April 15.

PULSe Student Travel Award Allocations:
Fall Deadline: October 15
Spring Deadline: April 15

Awards will range from $150 to $500. $2500 is the maximum amount that will be allocated in the fall and again the spring. Award allocations will be based on the estimated need stated on the travel form, level of participation in the professional event, travel distance, and contributions to the PULSe Program.

Student Achievement Awards

 

Outstanding Graduate Student in Research Award

This award is given annually to an outstanding PULSe graduate student in research.

 

Nominations come from the PULSe Executive Committee. It is expected that the Chair's of each Training Group consult with their faculty member's to determine the most appropriate nominee for the group. Each Training Group may nominate only one student. Nominations must be submitted to the Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs by no later than February 1st.

 

Once nominated, application requirements include:

-Application cover sheet (to be issued directly to nominee's)

-One page statement from the applicant describing his/her research accomplishments and contributions to the scientific community.

-Curriculum Vitae (4-page maximum)

-Letter of recommendation from major professor detailing the reasons that s/he believes the applicant is appropriate for this distinguished award.

-Letter of recommendation from a faculty member that is NOT affiliated with the students primary lab.

 

-Submit application materials to pulse@purdue.edu by March 1st.

 

NOTE:

-All application materials should be submitted electronically.

-Only currently enrolled students are eligible to apply.

-Applicants must have successfully completed the PULSe Preliminary Examination to be eligible to apply.

 

The award winner will be determined by several faculty reviewers. These faculty reviewers will be selected in the spring semester by the Associate Dean in the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs and the Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs.

 

Award amount: $350

 

Outstanding Graduate Student in Teaching Award

This award is given annually to an outstanding PULSe graduate student in teaching.

 

Nominations come from the PULSe Executive Committee. It is expected that the Chairs of each Training Group will consult with their faculty member's to determine the most appropriate nominee for the group. Each Training Group may nominate only one student. Nominations must be submitted to the Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs by no later than February 1st.

-250 word statement from the nominee detailing his/her approach to teaching.

-Student evaluations

-Curriculum Vitae (4-page maximum)

-Two letters of recommendation are required. These must come from the following individuals:

-Faculty member responsible for oversight of at least one of the course's taught by the nominee.

-Individual responsible for directly supervising the nominee's teaching of one of the courses taught.

 

-Submit application materials to pulse@purdue.edu by March 1st.

 

NOTE:

-All application materials should be submitted electronically.

-Only currently enrolled students are eligible to apply.

-Applicants must have completed at least two semesters of teaching to be eligible to apply.

 

The award winner will be determined by several faculty reviewers. These faculty members will be selected in the spring semester by the Associate Dean in the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs and the Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs.

 

Award amount: $300

 

Publication of the Year Awards

The PULSe Publication of the Year awards are given annually to recognize the most outstanding publications produced by PULSe students and to emphasize the importance of sharing research with the scientific community. To recognize the breadth of research being conducted in PULSe, 2-3 Publication of the Year awards will be given.

 

Application requirements include:

-An abstract of no more than 300 words.

-A paper copy of the actual published paper.

-A completed Publication of the Year form that includes: Name of Student, Name of Major Professor, Year of Study, Publication Title, Article Title, and additional bibliographic information.

-A letter of support from the student's major professor. This should detail the student's contributions to the research documented in the paper, along with their efforts to bring the material to publication.

 

-Submit application materials to pulse@purdue.edu by March 1st.

 

NOTE:

-All application materials should be submitted electronically.

-Only currently enrolled students are eligible to apply.

-Articles are eligible for submission only if they have been published sometime between January 2009 and January 2010.

 

The award winners will be determined by several faculty reviewers. These faculty members will be selected in the spring semester by the Associate Dean in the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs and the Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs.

 The faculty will evaluate submissions based on the quality of the journal, impact of the study, and the contributions of the student to the research documented in the article.

 

Award amount: 2-3 $150 awards

 

Certificate of Recognition for First-Authorship

In recognition of students who have served as first-author on a publication between January 2009 and 2010, certificates of recognition will be given.

 

Application requirements include:

-An electronic copy of the published paper.

-A completed PULSe Certificate of Recognition for First-Authorship form that includes: Name of Student, Name of Major Professor, Year of Study, Publication Title, Article Title, and additional bibliographic information.

 

-Submit application materials to pulse@purdue.edu by March 1st.

First-Year Poster Competition Awards

All first-year PULSe students will present a poster in the poster competition held at the PULSe Spring Reception. The students will showcase research done in one of their laboratory rotations.

 

These posters will be judged based on the quality of the research presented, along with the overall design of the poster. These posters will be judged by a panel of select current students from the 2nd year cohort and beyond. These panelists will be chosen prior to the reception by the Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs. The following awards will be announced at the PULSe Spring Reception:

 

Outstanding First-Year Poster Award

 

Award amount: $75

 

Special Recognition for First-Year Poster Award

 

Award amount: $50
