Current Research Interests:
My lab studies the neural responses to sound in the central auditory pathway(auditory thalamus and auditory cortex) through extracellular recordings of the neural activities of single neurons in awake animals and non-invasive recordings of auditory evoked potentials. Neural responses to sound in normal animals versus aged animals or "dyslexic" animals are compared in neuroanatomically identified regions. In addition, the lab studies the cellular and synaptic mechanisms by which neurons generate their in vivo responses by simulating synaptic inputs while recording from individual neurons intracellularly using patch-clamp techniques. This allows for the testing of specific hypotheses about the cellular deficits that are responsible for observed neural deficits in vivo that are correlated with behavioral deficits. The experimental results can then be compared to predictions of computational models of neuronal function in order to refine the models and make further experimental predictions.
